OPEN: 22nd October - 27th October
PRIVATE VIEW: 24th October 18:00-20:00
MEET THE ARTIST: 27th October, 13:00-15:00

East22 was founded in 2022 and all current members completed their MA in Fine Art at Norwich University of the Arts.
This exhibition ‘Unspoken’ showcases their diverse practice, which includes alternative photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting and textiles.
The theme has informed work which encompasses all stages of the art process from research to work in progress and final pieces.
Individual artists have focused on different aspects of the Unspoken including hidden histories and ‘misrememberings’, disappearing landscapes, subliminal connections with the natural world and explorations of internal worlds.
As visual artists whose work frequently involves non-verbal methods of communication this theme has been explored as a group before going on to use it as an impetus for individual work.

'Profane Geometry' by Dave Cassell

MEET THE ARTIST: 17th November, 13:00-15:00

The Artist says... 'As a trained Mathematician, I have always wrangled with the concept of infinity and the desire to look deeper both visually and spiritually. My visual vocabulary is inspired by microscopic images, unusual natural forms, satellite views of earth, and space telescope images, which explore existence beyond our normal visual perception.
Through these explorations I aim to find a deeper understanding of the universe and our place in it.
In my recent works I am endeavoring, through a range of processes, to give a greater sense of depth in my paintings so that the viewer has a feeling of something, perhaps imperceptible, that lies beyond what is patently visible. Some of the work in this exhibition consists of work started a few years ago but to which I have recently applied further layers.
Last year I spent some time looking at the work of artists, such as Hilma af Klint, under the label Sacred Geometry. I also revisited geometric material gleaned as a mathematics student many years ago. Not wanting to return to my earlier work using rigid geometric structures, I have developed my organic abstract work to achieve that same sense of spiritual meaning, hence the title ‘Profane Geometry’.
Whilst, for many years, I worked exclusively in oils I now work almost entirely in acrylics on board. It’s quick drying properties and the ability, often using different mediums, to add further layers in succession or sand back earlier layers lends itself well to my current practice.'

'Hello my name is...' by Olly O'Neill
OPEN: 19th November - 1st December
OPEN VIEW: 21st November, 18:00-20:00
MEET THE ARTIST: 1st December, 13:00-15:00
Main Gallery
Olly O’Neill resists identifying as a single style of painter, but is heavily influenced by historical abstract painting and Pop-art.
Working from his city centre studio O’Neills painted works explore the conversations between urban and digital spaces challenging authorship and conventional painting practice; as well as holding references to video games and philosophy. For O’Neill’s first solo show he positions himself as an interface between the real and virtual, often referring to digital workspaces or embracing the unpredictable, joyous and stressful nature of painting.
‘I’ve tried to break away from painting throughout uni, working in printmaking and fashion, but something always pulled me back in.’
Born in 1999 O’Neill graduated from Norwich University in 2023 with a degree in Fine Art and is currently studying for his MA.
He takes influence from music, film and video games as well as high and low art.
’At the moment I’m really into Michel Majerus, Joan Mitchell and Barbara Kreuger, but also, like, bits of graffiti.'
His extensive body of work is an ongoing exploration into his own methods and artistic
development.

'Archetypes' by Oliver Hanney
OPEN: 19th November - 24th November
OPEN VIEW: 23rd November, 13:00-15:00
Front Room
Having previously exhibited as a photographer, this is Oliver’s first solo exhibition as a mixed media artist. Fascinated by myth and legend, Oliver has been drawn to the works of Jung and Nietzsche and ideas about archetype – essentially primitive mental images passed down through generations from our earliest human ancestors and believed to be present in our collective unconscious. Philosophy, psychology and religion play a major part in Oli’s work as do characters from popular fiction and folklore.
Oliver combines AI with photoshop and digital images drawn with a stylus. He then enhances them using oil paint, pen, acrylic, plaster and spray paint. He upcycles frames wherever possible to create works which, whilst containing contemporary and futuristic elements, reference the artistic and collective past.
About the Artist:
Oliver, aka Oli, first began to excel in art, photography and drama when he attended a boarding school in Newcastle that specialised in supporting young people with dyslexia. He opted to continue with these interests through a Foundation course in Leicester where he studied art whilst also performing with two drama groups and, as a talented musician, taking part in festivals. Oli chose to specialise in Fine Art and moved to Norwich where he studied at the University of the Arts in the city centre. Heavily focussed on conceptual art, the course enabled Oli to develop photographic and digital skills which he continued exploring after graduating. He became skilled in the use of photoshop and other digital mediums and exhibited his photographs. At this time he also became very interested in philosophy, psychology, hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic programming. After a period of ill health, Oli was diagnosed with ADHD. He has subsequently found a way of channelling his energies into periods of intense creative activity. His post graduate interests and studies now heavily inform his work whilst his graphic and digital skills are combining with more traditional methods and materials to create intriguing, imaginative, witty and thought-provoking pieces.
